SM: Tell us about your business.
SC: I had a background in vegan food before starting the business. I had operated a food truck and was selling vegan sandwiches. I started creating vegan jerky by accident and found that it was delicious. We started selling it in coffee shops and elsewhere. After several years of slow growth, we’re now selling 115,000 bags a month.
SM: Who is your target customer?
SC: We had a niche clientele in the beginning. People thought I was crazy for trying to build a business out of this. Now we serve many “flexitarians” who may not be vegetarians or vegans but want to be more thoughtful about their food choices.
SM: What has been the greatest impact of COVID-19 on your business?
SC: The government deemed us an essential business, so we were able to keep operating and innovating. Some friends’ businesses shut down. However, we were able to keep growing.
SM: What are one or two actions you’ve taken to make a difference?
SC: We stayed nimble. We reorganized our kitchen and production facilities. We followed health protocols and started using a second shift.
SM: What are your goals for 2021?
SC: We are growing into a new 18,000-square-foot facility. We have built current regulations into our new facility operations, and we want to continue to become a better company. I want to stay engaged on a personal level.
SM: What is a mistake you’ve made along the way that other people can learn from?
SC: Less is more. If you’re busier, you’re not necessarily making more money. You may just be putting more on your plate. You need to conserve your bandwidth to use on core tasks. That keeps your quality up.
SM: What is inspiring to you today?
SC: Innovation inside the vegan community. It’s fascinating. People are creating products that work and that satisfy people’s expectations in terms of a traditional meal.

Muth’s Candies, Martha Vories
SM: Tell us about your business.
MV: We are a specialty candy manufacturer. We have been in business for 100 years as of February 1. We make more than 60 kinds of candy, and our candies range in size from a quarter ounce to more than 20 pounds.
SM: Who is your target customer?
MV: On a regular day, the average person is a target customer. Of course, around Valentine’s Day, we focus on men and the people they love, and around Easter, we focus on women and the people they love.
SM: What has been the greatest impact of COVID-19 on your business?
MV: We had to shut our retail store down. It was too small for us to keep it open. Occupancy and other restrictions just got too complicated. We have also had product on backorder from suppliers that never had an issue before.
SM: What are one or two actions you’ve taken to make a difference?
MV: We’ve grown our online business. Now virtually everything we make is available online. We’ve had a website for 30 years, so that helps. We’ve also added curbside service.
SM: What are your goals for 2021?
MV: We didn’t shrink much in 2020, though it threw off our steady growth trajectory a bit. We want to grow and make sure that we have a candy that matches each person’s tastes.
SM: What is a mistake you’ve made along the way that other people can learn from?
MV: Read the fine print in anything legally binding, even if the person you’re talking with seems honest. We were negotiating a deal at one point, and it came time to sign the contract. Thankfully, I read carefully enough to catch the word “exclusive,” which isn’t at all what we had been talking about. That contract could have put us out of business.
SM: What is inspiring to you today?
MV: The fact that my kids want the business inspires me. They will be the fourth generation of our family to run the business. Some of the nieces and nephews have the company in their hearts, and help out part-time.

CF: We have seen negative impacts similar to what is happening at other barbershops.

CA: Margaret’s Consignment has been here for 30 years. We’re a high-end consignment shop that offers designer labels that regular people can afford. I’m Margaret’s business partner. She’s moving into retirement.
SM: Who is your target customer?
CA: Mainly, we consider women of all ages our target customers. We are building up our younger clientele, too.
SM: What has been the greatest impact of COVID-19 on your business?
CA: Sales are down from 2019. That poses an obvious challenge.
SM: What are one or two actions you’ve taken to make a difference?
CA: We have built up our online presence, and we are increasing our marketing efforts. Customers can buy directly from our website now. We have also remodeled our store to make it more welcoming.
SM: What are your goals for 2021?
CA: We want to get our sales back up. It’s hard with people staying in. People are buying jewelry and handbags, so we’re focused on opening up that area of our business. Getting people in the door is the biggest challenge.
SM: What is a mistake you’ve made along the way that other people can learn from?
CA: It’s so critical to keep up with your online presence. That’s been especially important over the past year.
SM: What is inspiring to you today?
CA: Margaret! She grew up in an underprivileged environment. She started the business after carefully gathering merchandise. Even though she’s now mostly retired, she still comes up here and makes things better.

MM: Tell us about your business.
KB: We are a unique, cozy shop that offers premium ice cream, along with coffee, hot chocolate, apple cider and flavored lemonades. We serve everything in antique tea cups, and every chair, table, and spoon is uncommon here. I always wanted a dessert shop. I love providing a place for people to come and share good times.
MM: Who is your target customer?
KB: We love serving the local community. Neighbors come by with their kids. Many kids used to come by after school to hang out and play games, though that’s a bit different now with kids going to school online.
MM: What has been the greatest impact of COVID-19 on your business?
KB: We haven’t been able to serve our ice cream out of our unique set of cups. We’re using paper products instead right now. Also, sales have been slow due to closures and limits on customers in the shop.
MM: What are one or two actions you’ve taken to make a difference?
KB: We have increased our cleaning procedures. We want to make everyone feel safe. We also have to follow guidelines in terms of the number of people in our place.
MM: What are your goals for 2021?
KB: I hope people feel that they can put the COVID-19 situation behind them. I hope they can get out more. I’m applying for a grant to add a unique area to our business.
MM: What is a mistake you’ve made along the way that other people can learn from?
KB: Take the time to plan out and execute a marketing strategy. It’s critical to have a solid presence on social media right now. Signage is also important. After I upgraded our signage, people began coming in and saying that they had driven by the building for a long time without realizing we were here.
MM: What is inspiring to you today?
KB: A lady who owns a hair salon came in recently. She’s had a hard time with the regulations and trying to keep going. She bought some ice cream and left a nice tip. She told me that she knows how hard it is and appreciates us staying open and helping our customers. That inspires me to keep going.

MM: Tell us about your business.
LH: We provide footwear and insoles for walkers and runners. We also provide a wide array of accessories, from socks to electronics.
MM: Who is your target customer?
LH: Most of our customers are middle-aged and older. Many young people focus on buying online and wear what comes in the mail. The older customers are more likely to value getting to see and feel and try on the shoes to ensure they’ll have an outstanding experience.
MM: What has been the greatest impact of COVID-19 on your business?
LH: The supply chain has been disrupted. It’s been hard to get products in. We were closed for two months, so that was a significant, temporary impact.
MM: What are one or two actions you’ve taken to make a difference?
LH: As a company, we try hard to keep involved in the community and make positive impacts in people’s lives.
MM: What are your goals for 2021?
LH: The younger generation needs to see the value of trying shoes on and making sure they have the shoes they need. We’re going to work on that aspect of the business this year.
MM: What is a mistake you’ve made along the way that other people can learn from?
LH: Remember the 80/20 rule. You need to keep 80% of your stock in heavy hitters. I have to remember not to invest very heavily in fringe styles.
MM: What is inspiring to you today?
LH: Working one-on-one with customers inspires me. I don’t get to do that as often as I would like, but I love it when I get the chance.

MM: Tell us about your business.
JM: My husband retired as a detective with the Louisville Police Department. He needed to keep busy, so he began providing security services in 2012. The business grew by word of mouth, and we now have more than 300 employees. I retired and now help run the business.
MM: Who is your target customer?
JM: We have big and small contracts in many industries. Wherever and whatever the need is for security services, we try to meet that need. Some examples are hospitals, office buildings, school systems, local governmental agencies.
MM: What has been the greatest impact of COVID-19 on your business?
JM: Initially, some of the locations where we provide security were closed down.
MM: What are one or two actions you’ve taken to make a difference?
JM: We worked to find places for our employees during those shut downs and make sure we could provide compensation.
MM: What are your goals for 2021?
JM: We want to increase our employees’ benefits and pay. They’re the ones doing all the work, and we want to take care of them. We also want to get into federal work in addition to what we’re already doing.
MM: What is a mistake you’ve made along the way that other people can learn from?
JM: I would encourage new entrepreneurs to research key business costs thoroughly. For example, you need to understand workman’s comp insurance. You don’t want to cut corners with that. Make sure you get all of the certifications and licenses you need to be successful.
MM: What is inspiring to you today?
JM: The support of our customers has been so encouraging. They’ve helped us learn how to navigate the challenges of the past year. The other thing that inspires me is seeing employees make better money than they’ve ever made in their lives.

SM: Tell us about your business.
JR: We are a full-service spa and salon. We do just about everything you can do with hair. We also do massages, pedicures, manicures, nails, and more. We’ve been in business for 45 years.
SM: Who is your target customer?
JR: We serve a wide variety of people. We help many middle-aged women and young people who want fantasy hair colors.
SM: What has been the greatest impact of COVID-19 on your business?
JR: They shut us down for almost 3 months. Many clients told us that they weren’t sure why we weren’t deemed essential. Some of our clients don’t get out and get around anymore. Others just go to the doctor and here.
SM: What are one or two actions you’ve taken to make a difference?
JR: We adopted the required procedures. Our building is large, so that has helped. Also, we need to hire some new people now. We have to make sure they’re not into drama and make sure they can work well in a family atmosphere. We want to continue to have long-term employees.
SM: What are your goals for 2021?
JR: We intend to freshen up our website. We also want to stay sharp with our education and knowledge.
SM: What is a mistake you’ve made along the way that other people can learn from?
JR: Don’t live above your means in a business. Always think about recruiting. Something can happen to make you lose staff, and it always helps to be prepared.
SM: What is inspiring to you today?
JR: People need hope. The crisis has encouraged people to share their faith more openly. The challenges we’ve recently faced have encouraged everyone to lean on a power greater than themselves.
